Stablecoin Roulette: Why USDT and USDC Are Common Choices
Crypto casinos accept stablecoins (USDT, USDC) because they are less volatile than Bitcoin and easier to price. Why these specific stablecoins?

A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a value of $1 USD. USDT (Tether) and USDC (USD Coin) are the two largest stablecoins by market capitalization, therefore they are common choices for casinos accepting crypto deposits.
Understanding why these specific coins were chosen requires clarity on stablecoin mechanics and casino requirements.
How Stablecoins Maintain Value
USDC is issued by Coinbase and is fully audited. For every USDC in circulation, there is approximately one dollar held in a bank account. USDT is issued by Tether Limited and is claimed to be fully backed, though audits have been less frequent than USDC.
Both stablecoins maintain their $1 value through market mechanisms. If USDC falls to $0.99, arbitrageurs buy USDC and redeem it for $1, making profit. This activity pushes the price back to $1.
Why Casinos Prefer Stablecoins Over Bitcoin
Bitcoin volatility is extreme. A casino accepting $1000 in Bitcoin today might need to settle that on the blockchain tomorrow. If Bitcoin rises 5%, the casino has made $50. If Bitcoin falls 5%, the casino has lost $50.
Stablecoins maintain stable value. A casino accepting $1000 in USDC today can settle it tomorrow with minimal price variance. The casino does not have directional crypto exposure. This matters because a casino's business is gambling, not currency speculation.
Why USDT and USDC Specifically
Two factors matter: liquidity and acceptance.
Liquidity means you can buy and sell the coin easily. USDT and USDC are the two most liquid stablecoins. A casino can accept USDT deposits and immediately convert them to USD on a major exchange without slippage.
Acceptance means the coin is recognized as legitimate by regulators and major exchanges. USDC is issued by Coinbase, which is a regulated entity in the US. This gives USDC regulatory credibility. USDT, while less regulated, is issued by Tether Limited, which has been operating since 2014.
Smaller stablecoins (DAI, BUSD, USDN) lack the liquidity or regulatory recognition. A casino accepting only DAI would have difficulty converting customer deposits at a fair price.
The Regulatory Advantage
For a casino in a jurisdiction like Malta or Cyprus, accepting USDC (which is backed by Coinbase, a regulated US entity) creates a compliance chain: customer USDC to casino to Coinbase/USD back to banking infrastructure. This chain is simpler than accepting Bitcoin. Bitcoin has no issuer. It is pure code. A regulator cannot hold a person responsible for Bitcoin price risk or fraud. With USDC, Coinbase can be held responsible.
The Deposit Limit Consideration
Casinos accepting stablecoins can often accept larger deposits than casinos accepting Bitcoin. This is because stablecoins have less regulatory ambiguity. A player depositing $100,000 in USDC is depositing what the casino views as $100,000 USD. A player depositing $100,000 in Bitcoin is depositing an asset whose legal classification varies by jurisdiction.
What This Means for Players
A casino accepting USDT or USDC is indicating: we want to accept crypto but we do not want to hold crypto price risk. We will convert your deposit to dollars and operate normally. This is honest. The trade-off: you, the player, are holding the crypto-to-dollar conversion risk.
