Meme Coin Rug Pull: The On-Chain Levers to Check First

Liquidity pulls, live mint authority, freeze switches: every rug lever shows in public token data before the drop. Where to look, plus the SEC Game Coin case.

A meme coin rug pull is when the people who control a token use a lever buyers cannot see on the chart: they drain the liquidity pool, mint fresh supply, or freeze holders so nobody else can sell. Every one of those levers is visible in public contract and pool data before the drop. The trick is reading it before you ape.

The tape does not lie, but it does not volunteer either. You have to go look.

What a rug pull actually is on-chain

A rug pull is not a vibe. It is a permission the team kept and you did not check.

On Solana, a token's mint account stores a mint authority and a freeze authority. Those two keys, plus whoever holds the pool's LP tokens, are most of the game. If a dev can still use any of them, the rug is loaded.

The good news: these settings are public. The bad news: hype moves faster than anyone opens an explorer.

Lever one: the liquidity pool withdrawal

The classic rug. A token trades against a pool, the pool is backed by liquidity, and whoever holds the LP tokens can pull that liquidity out. Price goes to the floor because there is nothing left to sell into.

"Liquidity is locked" is the line every launch uses. Sometimes it is even true. The SEC's case against Game Coin's founders is the receipt for when it is not: the agency alleged the founders told buyers liquidity was locked while LP tokens accrued to Zhu's address, an address under his exclusive control.

Per the SEC, Zhu misappropriated about $553,000 in crypto assets. The settlement set disgorgement plus prejudgment interest at $672,992 plus a civil penalty, subject to court approval.

What to check: who holds the LP tokens right now, and whether a lock exists that you can verify on-chain. A tweet saying "locked" is not a lock.

Lever two: the mint authority

Only the mint authority can mint new tokens, and new tokens raise total supply. If that authority is still live, the team can print a fresh bag and dump it on the pool. Your share of supply shrinks while you watch.

What to check: the token's mint authority field. If it shows a wallet, someone can still print. If it has been set to none, Solana's docs say that permanently removes the authority role. No take-backs.

Lever three: the freeze authority

This is the quiet one, and it turns a token into a honeypot. A frozen token account cannot receive, transfer or burn tokens until it is thawed. You can buy. You just cannot sell.

Here is the part most explainers skip: freeze power needs a live freeze authority. Once the mint's freeze authority is revoked, nobody can freeze your account. That makes it a single field you can check, not a guess about the dev's intentions.

What to check: the freeze authority field on the mint. Wallet listed means the power exists. None means it is gone for good.

Lever four: concentrated holder supply

Even with every authority revoked and liquidity genuinely locked, a handful of wallets holding most of the supply can still dump in sequence. That is a slow rug, not a contract trick, so no single setting rules it out. Open the holder list and look at how much sits with the top wallets and the deployer before you size in.

Red flags before a rug pull, and how to avoid them

Run this checklist before any entry. It takes a few minutes and it covers the levers above.

A few more habits:

  • Treat "locked liquidity" as a claim until you see the lock yourself. The Game Coin case was built on exactly that gap.
  • Any authority still live is a lever someone can pull. Ask why it was kept.
  • No checklist makes a memecoin safe. It only tells you which doors are still open. Never chase a loss to win it back.

Straight answers

Is rug pulling meme coins illegal?

Lying to buyers about the token can be. In SEC v. Zhu the regulator alleged founders claimed locked liquidity while LP tokens sat with one founder, and the case settled with disgorgement, interest and a civil penalty, subject to court approval.

How to check if a coin is a rug?

Check three things before you buy: whether the mint authority is revoked, whether the freeze authority is revoked, and who actually holds the LP tokens. A locked-liquidity claim with no verifiable lock is a claim, not a fact.

How to spot a rug pull crypto?

Look for any lever the team can still pull. A live mint authority means new supply on demand, a live freeze authority means your account can be locked, and LP tokens in a team wallet mean the pool can be drained.

Are rug pulls profitable?

For whoever holds the levers, sometimes, until enforcement shows up. The SEC says Zhu took about $553,000 and the settlement figure for disgorgement plus interest came to $672,992 before the penalty.
